This serial ends with the renovation of a shed , but begins with the hunting for a home . Maybe that reads more like the start of your daily horoscope rather than an unfastener of a before - and - after redevelopment storey , but tolerate me to excuse .
It was 2019 , and I was like most former - point home buyers : dumb , with a pre - approval letter burning a hole in my air pocket . Okay , peradventure mute is a little impregnable . Insanely naïve experience more accurate , and definitely more kind . I had glamorize the entire home - purchasing appendage . In my genius , it was all floorplans , curb appeal , and cookies with realtors .

The reality of the office ? dwelling house purchasing in 2019 was ruffianly . The mart had gone from jalapeno - warm to ghost black pepper - hot . As a young mom fresh off of gestation leave , I was already overwhelmed . give a house hunt club into the mix , and I was in the line of flame of an adulting avalanche .
I assumed finding my dreaming home would be leisurely given my fairly reasonable wish inclination of three bedrooms , two Bath , wood base , and a “ oh man , would n’t it be nice ” fireplace . Reasonable yes , executable , sort of .
Within arcminute of finding an interesting home on a literal acres app , queer , it was pending . Thankfully , my Indianapolis - establish RealtorPatty England , is the patient sort . She kept reassuring me something was out there , and we would find that something .

So the search stay , and one house continued to come back up . The home met all my “ must have ” touchstone , but it had been on the marketplace for a while , which in turn , made me a small skeptical . What did the other domicile buyers know that I did n’t ? odd and with reservations for two , Patty and I decide it was at least deserving schedule a showing .
As we pulled into the private road , I was pleasantly surprised and cheeseparing giddy . The exterior was just as the selling category had described , “ precious as a clit . ” The interior was interesting and have a cool trading floor design , plus it had a hearth . I dug it .
The paint color was a little olive drab , but the current owners had place to repainting and brightening thing up a bit . Thewood floorslooked good to me , but the owners had place to spruce those up as well . The bedchamber were a good sizing , and the bath were recently update . So far , everything was move amazing ! Then Patty and I ventured into the backyard …

The yard was huge . Like “ how am I go to pout this thing ” sort of huge . restrain as the lawn was , I loved the musical theme of cause a big grounds in which my son could run and we could host our champion and family . So I quickly got past my fear of landscape gardening and embraced the idea of a riding lawn mower .
That ’s when I saw IT .
Nestled in a back turning point of the property , looming over the yard and the ranch dwelling …
A shed .
Now , when I think “ shed , ” I always thought of an outdoor broom closet . A post to keep a push mower and a rake . Maybe a few cans of paint .
This was not just any shed . This was a shed that gobbles upother shedsfor breakfast and still has way for oatmeal . Some would call this behemoth a barn . I called it out of place . What in the world was this crazy construction doing in a suburban backyard ?
Once again curious and skeptical , Patty and I abuse inside . This shed was loaded with amenities and potential . It had insulation , electricity , a window , and a wood - burn hearth . It was basically asecond house in the backyard . I have always been a lover of more living space , but I did n’t expect it to be a partially polish off structure just hanging out in my backyard .
This was a curveball I had not seen amount and one I had to really think about before taking a baseball swing .
I proceeded to file this home in the back of my mind and maintain going to showings . Lots of sign of the zodiac , all without barns , each with a petty something I want in a home . Other homes I saw would have suit the bill , but none of them were THE house . I kept having dream about the barn house . Something about that house retain pull back me in , so I scheduled a second showing . I break , I saw , I was on the fencing again . I could n’t get past the barn , and I was n’t sure why . I needed to speak it out .
So that dark , over dinner with admirer ( one of whom had a doctorate in psychology ) , we hashed it out . The abode hit all the marks : three chamber , two baths , wood flooring , fireplace . Check ! The emplacement , skinny to school / work and filled with families . A domicile ladder . Then there was that barn .
The barn was scary to me , but why ? Was it because I was afraid of the upkeep ? Nah , not really . It would be oeuvre , but I could belike treat it .
Was it scary because I did n’t bang what to do with it ? Ding , ding , ding !
Yep . That was it . It was the potential that was pit me away . This b could be a playroom for my son , a workspace / hideaway for me , an entertainment space for the family , an Airbnb , or aliving spacefor my mom when she retires ! The possibilities were endless and overwhelming , and evidently , the root causa of my apprehension .
Once I understood what I was uneasy about , the buy became a no - brainer . What to do with the shed became something I could , and did , kick down the road for two years … until now .
Now I am ready to present theshed , its voltage , and all of the inquiry and work it will take to make a vision become a reality .
